Americans who voted for Donald Trump for president did so because, by golly, he “tells it like it is.” He’s not a craven politician like the rest of them in Washington.
The reverse of that has proven to be true, of course.
If you want a politician who really tells it like it is, without mincing words, no holds barred, look no further than Arizona, where Democratic congressman Ruben Gallego today abandoned all diplomatic niceties, doing anything but skirt the issue in a tweet about Trump.
“You are such a psychopath that you have to make even the death of 17 children about you. America will regret the day you were ever born.”
Wow! Trump had tweeted that the FBI was spending too much time investigating his possible collusion with Russia in the 2016 election to do its job properly.
The FBI did indeed make a tragic mistake in failing to follow up on indications the shooter in the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, was disturbed and planned an attack. But that failure in no way mitigates the need for Special Counsel Robert Mueller to uncover the truth about Russian meddling in our elections, which, intelligence agencies say, is continuing. Trump obviously is using every excuse he can find to undermine the investigation. His mantra, repeated ad infinitum, is: “No collusion. There was no collusion.”

I wonder if it has occurred to Trump and to his supporters that three things are at play here: (1) He doth protest too much; (2) if he is innocent, why doth he protest so much? (3) why doth he not implement the sanctions against Russia voted by Congress?
In a previous tweet, Rep. Gallego had something to say about that, too: “Yes, the Russians’ goal was to divide and weaken America. They did that by helping Donald Trump get elected president. No one should diminish or lose sight of that.”
Trump has said nary a word about a need for gun control measures to keep weapons of mass destruction such as the AR-15, military-styled semi-automatic out of circulation as a means of preventing atrocities like the one in Parkland from happening again. Instead, as Rep. Gallego said, the president has used it for his own benefit. This is the kind of leadership the man who “tells it like it is” is giving America and the world.
“I called this man unhinged before he became president,” Gallego said on MSNBC. Further, the congressman called him a “racist.”
Gallego wasn’t through. Of the Republican speaker of the House, who defends Trump, Gallego said, “Paul Ryan is a coward.”
Asked if he wished he hadn’t made his comments about Trump, Gallego said, “I have no regrets.”
The Arizona congressman is what this country needs a lot more of: a politician who tells it like it is.
