Folks, in case you weren’t watching, this country is in deep trouble. I’m shelving the world of books for the moment to talk about a dangerous crisis. We have a president, Donald Trump, who has committed every criminal act conceivable except for shooting someone in downtown Manhattan (stay tuned), a lawless attorney general who is serving as his personal attorney, and Republicans in Congress who allow Trump to get by with anything. Our only remaining defense against this would-be dictator is the Democratically controlled House — whose majority leader won’t do anything about it. Guess who’s left: you and I. Dear Speaker Pelosi:
This is a letter, with slight modifications, that I recently sent to the Democratic National Committee. I thought you should know how a growing number of Democratic voters feel about your guidance, or lack thereof, in this crucial time in our history. The letter is also going to the 2,100 subscribers to my blog, and to my social media pages.
I recently received a letter from the Democratic National Committee asking for a donation. Back around 2016, I likewise was asked for a donation. At that time, I responded that I wouldn’t give a penny to the Democrat Party ever again after what they did to Barack Obama. When the Republican attack dogs snarled and lashed out at him, the Democratic congressional candidates ran from him with their tails between their legs, when they should have been telling the Republicans to go to hell and shouting his numerous accomplishments from the rooftops. They showed the signature trait of Democrats: fecklessness, weakness, cowardice.
Joe Biden
We have a president who has committed untold acts of corruption, treason, and myriad other violations of the Constitution that qualify as high crimes and misdemeanors. The most recent, disclosed by a whistle-blower in his administration, is his apparent dangling of $250 million in aid to the president of Ukraine as a reward for coming up with dirt on the family of Joe Biden.
Richard Nixon
The Democrats in Congress allow this evil and unhinged man to get by with all of it. Why? Because they are all of the above: feckless, weak, and cowardly. As panelists on the CNN media show Reliable Sources pointed out recently, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton were guilty of a tiny number of impeachable offenses compared to what Donald Trump is guilty of. Yet Clinton was impeached, and the articles were drawn up and ready to go for Nixon, while today’s dilatory House dawdles, dallies and wrings its hands, gauging the political calculus, its feet stuck in quicksand, playing it safe, or so they think.
Bill Clinton
There is abundant, absolute proof of numerous high crimes and misdemeanors, yet Nancy Pelosi and the House investigative bodies say they need to gather more evidence. A majority of the Democratic House members have declared their support for Articles of Impeachment to be drawn up, yet Pelosi refuses to do it, fearing a lack of public support and a backlash against the people who voted for the new House members in Trump districts. But that doesn’t make sense. These people voting for the new House members were anti-Trump, and expected the representatives to counter him. That’s why they were elected.
Nancy Pelosi
A small minority of the public favored impeachment of Nixon – until the articles were drawn and people saw clearly his criminality. That is exactly what would happen now: The public would be riveted to their TVs, eager to learn what Trump has done, and favorability for impeachment would soar. Further investigations and hearings could proceed simultaneously to solidify public support, which possibly would persuade the Senate to vote for conviction.
Rachel Bitecofer
Many Democratic voters are just like the weak, politically calculating politicians of their party. Who to vote for as president? A candidate who would appeal to blacks? One who would garner the young vote? One attractive to blue collar workers? To women voters? To those who would never vote for a woman president? And on and on. These voters are frequently not planning to vote for the candidate they believe would be the best president.

Yet the one person who foresaw the huge House wins for Democrats in 2018 has said any Democrat – possibly except Bernie Sanders because of his socialist self-identification – will win the election. Her name is Dr. Rachel Bitecofer, a political scientist with the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. Hillary Clinton lost because of political calculating, figuring she’d stand a better chance by moderating her positions, the professor said. That turned away a lot of the liberal voters, who figured she would win, anyway. But in 2018, they all panicked, and turned out to vote in the mid-term elections. Bitecofer predicted the same thing will happen in the 2020 presidential election, with the Democrat getting 278 of the 270 electoral votes needed, without considering four toss-up states. Even adding all the electoral votes of those four, Trump still gets only 258 votes.
Robert Mueller
Meanwhile, what are the Democrats going to do about Trump? Nothing. They could have, and should have, begun impeachment proceedings in mid-May, after Robert Mueller’s job was finished. That’s what the Republicans would have done, were the situation reversed. As a pundit said awhile back on TV: The Republicans are wrong, but they are strong. The Democrats are right, but they are weak.
Dwight Eisenhower
Four months have been wasted, and unless articles are drawn up fast, there won’t be enough time to impeach before the 2020 election race cranks into high gear.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
It’s utterly shameful – just as it will be if we pass up this golden opportunity, likely never to be repeated, to get this country back on track and move it forward with bold initiatives, such as what Dwight Eisenhower did with the interstate highway system and Franklin D. Roosevelt accomplished with the New Deal. Instead, we’ll probably put the “safe,” the “more electable,” candidate in office, and we’ll be stuck in the same ol’ same ol’.
I am thoroughly disgusted. So no, you’re not getting a plugged nickel from me.
